چکیده

We propose a model of the glomerular stage of the insect olfactory pathway that exhibits coding of inputs through spatio}temporal patterns of the type observed experimentally in locust.Making use of the temporal bins provided by the oscillatory "eld potential we "nd that it su$ces to employ simple little-Hop"eld dynamics to account for a rich repertoire of patterns. In particular, we show that we are able to reproduce complex activity patterns from electrophysiological recordings in insects. Biologically plausible mechanisms of synaptic adaptation are discussed. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

Oscillatory sequences of firing in the locust olfactory system: mechanisms and functional significance

What neural codes does the brain use to represent and process sensory information? Stimulus-evoked oscillatory synchronization of neuronal activity has been observed in many systems, yet the possible functions of such rhythmic synchronization in neural coding remain largely speculative. In the locust, odors appear to be represented by dynamic ensembles of transiently synchronized neurons. The e...

Strong coupling between pyramidal cell activity and network oscillations in the olfactory cortex.

Oscillatory activity is a prominent characteristic of electrophysiological recordings in the olfactory system and has been proposed to play a key role in encoding olfactory representations. Studies in several systems have shown that some aspects of information coding involve characteristics that intertwine spikes and fast oscillations (in the beta and gamma range) of local field potentials (LFP...

A spiking neural network model of the locust antennal lobe : towards neuromorphic electronic noses inspired from insect olfaction

In analogy with the non-selectivity of gas sensors, an olfactory receptor neuron is not tuned to a specific odor and hence presents a lack of selectivity. Despite this shortcoming, insects have impressive abilities to recognize odors. Understanding how their olfactory system works could then be highly beneficial for designing efficient electronic noses. In particular, the antennal lobe, the fir...

Temporal Coding in Electroreception

T activated glomeruli, (ii) the spatial combination of active neurons, (iii) the slow temporal sequence of activity patterns imposed by sampling-related process, (iv) the rapid synchronization of neuronal subpopulations relative to the network oscillatory regime. Therefore coding in the olfactory system is not a static phenomenon but a dynamical process with different temporal components, each ...

Oscillatory Synchronization Requires Precise and Balanced Feedback Inhibition in a Model of the Insect Antennal Lobe

In the insect olfactory system, odor-evoked transient synchronization of antennal lobe (AL) projection neurons (PNs) is phase-locked to the oscillations of the local field potential. Sensory information is contained in the spatiotemporal synchronization pattern formed by the identities of the phase-locked PNs. This article investigates the role of feedback inhibition from the local neurons (LNs...
